70: Chapter 70 Handling the Aftermath
In the bedroom, Li Sisi, her body somewhat translucent, stood before the bed. She held an exquisite gift box in her hands, staring blankly at the sleeping Liu Wenxuan.
At this moment, she was not a physical entity, and the aura about her seemed as if it might drop below the Ghost Realm at any moment.
"Forget me. You deserve better." After a long while, Li Sisi spoke.
As her voice faded, the scene before them began to shatter, and the two returned once again to the abandoned courtyard.
The cool night breeze blew against their faces—a real sensation. The memory playback had ended.
"I remember. I remember everything!" Liu Wenxuan clutched the pocket watch in his hand tightly, sobbing uncontrollably.
Lu Siye had never been in love, so he could not understand what Liu Wenxuan was feeling right now. He could only pat him on the shoulder and offer a word of condolences.
Standing back up, Lu Siye walked to the edge of the well and peered inside.
The well, which had been filled with murky water in the memory, had dried up at some point. A curled-up corpse was lying on top of several skeletons at the bottom of the well.
Lu Siye leaped down to the bottom of the well. It was filled only with dense Yin Qi; he did not sense even a trace of resentment.
It seemed that after the victims had taken their revenge, they had dispersed on their own.
Arriving at the center of the well bottom, Li Sisi's remains lay atop the pile of bones. Apart from her skin being a bit pale, she looked just like a living person.
As expected of a Ghost's remains; even after spending such a long time in the summer heat, there were still no signs of decay.
After absorbing all the Yin Qi in the well, Lu Siye reached out and hoisted Li Sisi's remains onto his back.
Because the well opening was quite small, he had to carry her on his back to get out.
Lu Siye looked up at the opening and leaped back to the surface.
Placing the remains in front of Liu Wenxuan, he turned his head toward the small building.
On the first floor, there was still a strong reaction of Yin Qi.
He just didn't know if it was another Ghost, or that beast who had been sliced to pieces earlier.
Glancing back at Liu Wenxuan, who was weeping while holding the remains, Lu Siye sighed softly and transformed into a blur, entering the building.
It was the same room he had seen in the memory. A short, lecherous-looking man was wandering aimlessly around the room.
Unlike in the memory, there were now two large pits in the floor of the room that hadn't been there before.
At the same moment Lu Siye saw the beast, the beast saw him too.
Thump.
The beast fell to his knees immediately. Deep fear appeared on his face, and his whole body began to tremble. He frantically started kowtowing to Lu Siye, muttering incessantly.
"Please, let me go!"
"Please, let m..."
With every kowtow, a piece of bloody flesh fell from his body.
[Ding~ Fear Value +99!]
[Ding~ Fear Value +99!]
[...]
"Driven to a breakdown by torture, huh?" Lu Siye listened to the notification sounds and watched the beast's reaction.
At this moment, all he wanted to say was, "Well done!"
Before long, aside from his head, the rest of his body had been reduced to a yellowed skeleton.
"I've already begged for mercy, why won't you let me go!" He raised his head, his face showing extreme madness.
As he spoke, his head and the flesh that had fallen on the ground turned into a wisp of black mist, which merged into the skeleton, turning him into a true skeleton.
"Why won't you let me go!" A chilling voice emanated from within the skeleton.
He lunged toward the door. Lu Siye instinctively slapped him, the immense force shattering his entire head.
Although his head was gone, for a madman like him, it made no difference; he still lunged at Lu Siye.
Just as he was about to step out of the room, a pitch-black chain appeared around his neck. A massive force from the chain dragged him back into the room, slamming him heavily onto the floor.
The force was so great that even the bones, nourished by Yin Qi, developed fine cracks, and a large pit was smashed into the floor.
Now, the number of pits on the floor had become three.
"A curse?" Lu Siye looked at the pitch-black chain.
On it, he sensed a familiar aura—an aura that felt very similar to the Soul Control Technique he had encountered before.
The chain slowly vanished, and the skeleton gradually returned to human form.
It slowly crawled up, looked at Lu Siye standing in the doorway, and fell to its knees with a thud once again.
[Ding~ Fear Value +99!]
[...]
Listening to the notification sounds, Lu Siye suddenly wasn't in a rush to act.
Over ten minutes later, the floor, which had been relatively intact, had become pockmarked with holes. The skeleton lying in the rubble no longer regenerated, and yellowed bones were scattered everywhere.
After waiting a while longer, it still didn't regenerate.
He had thought he could infinitely farm Fear Value, but it turned out it couldn't even manage more than three thousand before giving out.
Determining that the opponent was no longer useful, Lu Siye finally walked in slowly, stepping over the rubble to reach it.
"Dying like this is really letting you off too easy!" Lu Siye raised his foot and stomped the beast's skull to pieces.
[Ding~ ...]
The familiar notification sound rang out; the System confirmed its death.
A somewhat translucent chain appeared at its cervical vertebrae, then shattered with a bang, slowly dissipating into the air.
Lu Siye glanced at the remains on the ground. Vast Yang Qi poured from his soles into the scattered bone fragments, and a raging Yang Fire rose up, burning them completely to ashes.
When he came out of the small building, Liu Wenxuan had already composed himself. He was holding Li Sisi's remains, waiting for him in the courtyard.
"What do you plan to do?" Lu Siye asked as he approached Liu Wenxuan.
"I want to lay her to rest," Liu Wenxuan said indifferently, his face devoid of any emotion, as if his heart had already died.
"Her remains have been nourished by Yin Qi; if you bury her, she's likely to undergo corpse transformation. Cremation is the only option," Lu Siye reminded him.
"Then let it be cremation." Liu Wenxuan nodded.
"She is a person forgotten by the whole world. She has no ID information, no household registration. She cannot go to a crematorium." Liu Wenxuan said, looking down at the girl in his arms.
After speaking, he looked up at Lu Siye and begged, "Please help me one more time!"
Lu Siye patted his shoulder without saying a word.
He took out his phone and made a call to the person in charge of the North District—Shangguan Qingxue.
"Hello, little brother, is something up so late?" Shangguan Qingxue's charming voice came from the other end of the line.
"Sister Qingxue, it's like this..." Lu Siye briefly explained the matter concerning Li Sisi.
"There is one more thing. I suspect there is a burial pit underground here. Otherwise, the resentment of those who died unjustly alone could not have stirred up such deep Yin Qi from underground." Subsequently, Lu Siye voiced his hypothesis.
"I understand! I'll head over now."
(I feel like I must have been provoked or had a brain cramp back when I designed this story in the outline. Writing it has given me such bad writer's block that I'm coughing up blood _(°ω°」∠)_)
